With alcoholic liver disease reported to be on the rise, many of us want to know: how do you actually look after your liver? How much can you safely drink? Are some types of alcohol better than others? And does Dry January actually work? We put these questions to consultant liver specialist Dr Jeremy Cobbold, who gave us some surprising answers:

The effect of Dry January: What happens to your body when you give up alcohol for one month?

On the Channel 4 show Live Well Longer, around 20 women were studied to look at the effects of giving up alcohol for a month. The results were astounding – from weight loss to lower blood pressure, and even the possible reduced risk of developing cancer. We asked liver specialist Professor Kevin Moore, who featured heavily in the programme, to explain what this means – and whether a “detox” from alcohol can really work.
