Rhinoplasty surgery is a surgical procedure performed to reshape or reconstruct the nose that can address both aesthetic and functional concerns.

Here, Dr Fas Arshad, leading consultant plastic and ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon, offers an expert insight into rhinoplasty surgery.

What are the common reasons for undergoing rhinoplasty?

No profile reshaping (including hump removal), tip reshaping, or to improve nasal breathing issues.

Can rhinoplasty correct asymmetry in the nose?

I first need to carefully assess the cause of the asymmetry, but then yes, it is possible. I can use cartilage from inside the nose (septum) or ear cartilage to reconstruct any defects that could be causing the asymmetry.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

I perform both open rhinoplasty (using a small incision between the nostrils) and closed rhinoplasty (fully internal). Depending on the individual case, either of these techniques can be used.

What are the risks and potential complications involved with rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a very safe and common procedure. As a head and neck surgeon, I am very comfortable performing surgeries on the face and neck.

However, as with any surgery, rhinoplasty is not completely risk-free. Bruising and swelling are quite common during the initial days after the procedure. Some patients need a pack in the nose for a few days afterwards if there is oozing. A small percentage of patients may need a further tweak once healed to achieve the desired outcome.

When can I resume normal activities after rhinoplasty?

Usually, 2 weeks after surgery.
