Labiaplasty: Your questions answered
Escrito por:Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure, aimed at reshaping or reducing the size of the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) or labia majora (the outer vaginal lips), that can be performed for both cosmetic and functional purposes.
Mr Mohammad Masood, leading consultant gynaecologist, provides essential information about labiaplasty, including how it is performed, what to expect during recovery, and its impact on sexual sensation or function.
Why might I choose to have labiaplasty?
People may choose to have labiaplasty for a variety of reasons.
Functionally, enlarged or asymmetrical labia can cause physical discomfort, pain, or irritation during everyday physical activities. Wearing tight clothing, such as leggings, can also exacerbate this discomfort, making it difficult to engage in certain tasks or feel at ease in social situations. During sexual intercourse, larger labia can cause pulling or pain.
Moreover, some people also experience hygiene challenges, including increased moisture and difficulty cleaning, which can lead to recurrent infections or irritation. Furthermore, labiaplasty can help resolve changes caused by childbirth, as vaginal delivery can sometimes stretch or tear the labia, leading to changes in its appearance or discomfort in daily life.
Aesthetically, some people feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia, especially if asymmetrical or larger than average. This concern can affect confidence in intimate relationships or lead to a reduced sense of self-esteem.
How is the labiaplasty procedure performed?
Labiaplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case and your individual preferences. There are two primary techniques used to perform the surgery: the “trim” method and the “wedge” method.
The trim method removes the excess tissue along the edges of the labia minora, creating a smaller and more symmetrical appearance. This technique is often used if you are concerned about any darkened edges of the labia.
The wedge method, on the other hand, removes a V-shaped section of tissue from the middle of the labia. This technique is often used if you need to preserve the natural edge of the labia and reduce bulk without altering texture or pigmentation.
After the excess tissue is removed, the remaining labial tissue is carefully sutured to ensure proper healing. The procedure lasts between 1 to 2 hours. If necessary, it can also be combined with other procedures, such as clitoral hood reduction or vaginoplasty, for a more comprehensive result.
Furthermore, labiaplasty can safely be performed after childbirth. However, it’s generally advised to wait several months after childbirth to allow the body to fully heal before undergoing surgery. If additional pregnancies are planned, this should also be discussed with your gynaecologist, as childbirth can alter the surgical results.
What can I expect during recovery?
Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common in the first few days, and your gynaecologist will recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing, applying cold compresses, and avoiding prolonged sitting to reduce swelling. Pain is usually managed with either over-the-counter or prescription medications.
You will typically be advised to avoid sexual activity, tampons, and strenuous exercise for approximately 6 weeks to allow the area to fully heal. Additionally, it’s also important to follow hygiene instructions carefully to prevent infections, including cleaning with mild soap and patting the area dry.
Swelling and bruising will gradually subside over a few weeks, but complete healing will take 6 to 8 weeks. It’s essential to attend all follow-up appointments to monitor healing and address any concerns.
Will labiaplasty affect sexual sensation or function?
When performed by a qualified gynaecologist, labiaplasty doesn’t interfere with sensitivity, as the procedure focuses on the labia minora or majora, which aren’t directly involved in sexual pleasure. The clitoris, the primary organ responsible for sexual sensation, isn’t affected by the surgery.
However, as with any surgical procedure, there is a small risk of scarring or nerve damage, which could impact sexual function. To minimise risks, it’s essential to choose a skilled and experienced gynaecologist who specialises in labiaplasty and understands the delicate anatomy involved.
