Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system, leading to a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, muscle weakness, and coordination issues. While there is no cure for MS, exercise has been shown to play a significant role in managing symptoms and improving the overall quality of life for individuals with this condition.

On hand to provide us with more information about how exercise can benefit patients with MS is esteemed consultant neurologist, Dr Mazen Matar.

What are the benefits of exercise for MS patients?

Regular physical activity is beneficial for people with MS in several ways. Firstly, exercise can help alleviate common symptoms such as fatigue. Engaging in activities like aerobic exercise and strength training can boost energy levels and reduce the overwhelming sense of tiredness that many MS patients experience. Moreover, exercise improves cardiovascular health, enhances muscle strength, and increases flexibility, all of which are crucial for maintaining mobility and independence.

Secondly, exercise has been linked to improved mental health. MS patients often face depression and anxiety due to the chronic nature of their illness. Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Furthermore, participating in group exercise classes or activities can provide social interaction and support, which are vital for mental well-being.

Tailoring exercise programmes

It's essential for individuals with MS to tailor their exercise programmes to their specific needs and abilities. Low-impact exercises such as swimming, walking, and yoga are often recommended because they are easier on the joints and can be adjusted to various fitness levels. Strength training with light weights or resistance bands can help maintain muscle mass and improve balance, reducing the risk of falls.

Physical therapists or exercise physiologists specialising in MS can create personalised exercise plans. They can ensure that the exercises are safe and effective, taking into consideration the fluctuating nature of MS symptoms. Pacing and monitoring intensity is crucial to avoid overheating and excessive fatigue, which can exacerbate symptoms.
