Did you know that around 48% of people say that a smile is the most memorable feature when you first meet someone? However, ageing, accidents and discolouration can all be factors that can rob you of that perfect smile. That is where cosmetic dentistry comes in. But what is cosmetic dentistry? And how can it help you? We talked to expert Dr Adam Thorne, who provided the answers.

What does a cosmetic dentist do?

Cosmetic dentistry is all about improving your smile and the overall aesthetics of how your teeth look. The goal is to restore a patient’s health, function and aesthetics so they look natural and beautiful.

What can cosmetic dentistry do for you?

If you are unhappy with your smile or even your facial appearance, cosmetic dentistry can offer often many solutions. Beautiful smiles and healthy teeth can boost your confidence. 96% of adults believe a nice smile makes you more attractive to the opposite sex, whilst 74% believe an attractive smile will enhance your career.

Cosmetic dentistry covers dental treatments that range from whitening to white fillings to teeth straightening (orthodontics) to veneers and crowns

Can cosmetic dentistry fix receding gums?

Cosmetic dentistry can help with receding gums. We assess what has caused the gums to recede and once they are fully healthy, we can offer solutions to improve the appearance of receding gums.

What is smile design?

Smile design is a dental procedure which produces natural-looking smiles by making the teeth straighter, whiter and more beautiful. As you age, natural wear, chipping and discoloration can diminish your smile, which can affect your appearance and confidence. Smile design can provide an enhancement to put the smile back on your face.

Cosmetic dentists work with you to plan your own smile design. An initial consultation is carried out to establish your cosmetic dental goals, ensure they are reached, and to deal with any underlying dental problems. Reference photos from when the patient was younger or photos of their favourite actors and actresses’ smile can be useful in this planning process. However, no two cases are the same; the end result is a unique smile made just for you.

Which is better – a veneer or a crown?

Veneers are very thin layers of porcelain that are placed over teeth to recreate their natural look. They are also stronger and sturdier than natural tooth enamel, helping them to protect the surface of the teeth. Veneers are often the ideal solution for patients who want to alter the size, shape, or colour of their teeth, or make small changes to the position of their teeth.

In patients whose teeth seem immune to the effects of whitening, veneers can brighten even the darkest teeth.

If a tooth has had some significant work completed on it then there may not be enough tooth structure to support a dental veneer. In this case, we look to provide dental crowns. These look similar to dental veneers but cover the whole tooth, rather than just the front of it.

Dental veneers and crowns, when completed by a cosmetic dentist and technician should look the same from the front and blend in naturally.
