Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a medical procedure designed to help individuals with severe obesity lose weight and improve their overall health. For those who have tried other weight-loss methods without success, bariatric surgery can be a highly effective option.

By altering the digestive system to limit food intake or reduce nutrient absorption, it promotes substantial, sustained weight loss and can improve or resolve obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnoea.

Types

There are several types of bariatric surgery, with the most common being gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. In gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon creates a small pouch from the stomach and connects it directly to the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the digestive tract.

This limits the amount of food intake and reduces calorie absorption. In a sleeve gastrectomy, about 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a tube-shaped stomach or “sleeve” that holds less food. Adjustable gastric banding involves placing a band around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch, also limiting food intake.

Suitability

Bariatric surgery is generally considered for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or for those with a BMI of 35 or higher with serious health conditions related to obesity. Prior to surgery, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation to ensure they are suitable candidates, including assessments by dietitians, psychologists, and physicians. Commitment to lifestyle changes, including diet modifications and regular physical activity, is essential for success.

Complications

While bariatric surgery can be transformative, it’s not without risks. Complications may include infections, blood clots, and nutrient deficiencies, as well as the potential need for further surgeries. That said, most individuals experience positive outcomes, including significant weight loss, reduced risk of chronic diseases, and improved quality of life.

For those struggling with obesity, bariatric surgery offers a path to better health and long-term weight management. Through careful consideration and a commitment to lifelong lifestyle changes, patients can achieve substantial health benefits, making bariatric surgery a powerful option in the fight against obesity and related health complications.
