Teeth whitening involves bleaching teeth to achieve a lighter shade, although the outcome may not necessarily be a brilliant white colour but rather a significant lightening by several shades.

While there are over-the-counter (OTC) treatments available and some salons may provide this service, there are associated risks, and it is advisable to have the procedure performed by a dental professional.

It can notably benefit individuals with yellow-toned teeth; however, not everyone is suitable for teeth whitening (e.g., those with gum disease), and it is ineffective on dentures, veneers, crowns, or fillings.

Home teeth whitening kits are an alternative option; however, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, the whitening agent, is typically lower in over-the-counter kits compared to professional treatments due to legal restrictions.

Consequently, over-the-counter kits may not contain a sufficient amount of hydrogen peroxide for effective whitening results.

The results of teeth whitening are temporary and typically last anywhere from several months to approximately three years. Factors such as smoking or consuming coffee, tea, or red wine can diminish the whitening effects or lead to teeth staining once again.
