Ear wax removal for ENT

Ear wax removal is a common procedure to remove excessive or compacted ear wax from the ear canal, when it is causing discomfort and/or hearing loss.

Why is ear wax removal required?

Ear wax can build up in the ear canal causing discomfort and hearing loss. If ear wax builds up excessively, or becomes compacted, it may be required to have a procedure with a specialist to remove the excess wax.

How is the ear wax removed?

Ear wax can be removed in a number of ways. Sometimes home remedies can be used to remove the ear wax, but in cases of excessive build up of ear wax, or when the wax has become compacted, a specialist will use one of the following techniques to remove the excess wax.

  • Ear irrigation - this procedure involves flushing the ear with warm water using a syringe or special device.
  • Microsuction - This procedure involves using a small vaccuum to apply suction to the ear, guided by a microscope. The suction will remove the wax from the ear. This is the preferred procedure by medical professionals.

What are the benefits of the microsuction procedure?

As the microsuction procedure does not use water, there is a reduced risk of infection.
