Professor Charles Knowles is chief academic officer and clinical director of research and innovation at Cleveland Clinic London. He is also professor of surgery at Queen Mary University of London and an honorary consultant colorectal surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust and St Marks Hospitals. He is also chief medical officer of Amber Therapeutics Ltd.
Professor Knowles qualified from the University of Cambridge and undertook general surgical training and a PhD in London. His main research interests cover the development and evaluation of new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic functional and neuromuscular disorders of the bowel and pelvic floor (with focus on neuromodulation and cell therapies). Clinically, he is a key international opinion leader on chronic constipation, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and GI neuromuscular diseases.
Professor Knowles holds honorary chairs at University College London and the University of Antwerp. He has authored 300 peer-reviewed publications (H-index: 68) as well as contributing to major international colorectal and general surgical texts, national guidance and health policy documents. He was awarded an honorary fellowship of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons in 2021. Aside from his day job(s), Professor Knowles is a semi-professional musician, songwriter and author. He also speaks some French, Spanish, and Portuguese (Brazilian).

Professor Knowles is the BEST! He is kind, empathetic and explained everything in detail to me. He accommodated me when I presented with an additional medical condition, for which I am extremely thankful. I had total confidence in him and his team for my surgery, which couldn’t have been performed by anyone as skilled and knowledgeable as Professor Knowles. Professor Knowles is by far one of the most exceptional doctors I’ve been treated by. His medical understanding and expertise is brilliant but more than that he is so kind, he really makes you feel cared for and that he wants to make a positive impact on your life. On two occasions he’s accommodated me when I have had emergency flare ups and needed to be seen urgently.
I have seen A LOT of doctors in this field but he is most definitely the best. I am so very grateful to him and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending him to anyone.

I'd long put off seeking treatment but Professor Knowles was so helpful, kind, easy to talk to and most of all put me at ease immediately.
My treatment was a real success - I just wish I had seen Professor Knowles years earlier.

I recently have recieved care from Prof. C. Knowles. As a Northern Ireland patient, Prof. Knowles has been extremely accomodating in referring me for the appropiate tests and with a follow up consultation. I felt confident in his expertise, he was approachable and answered my questions patiently and clearly. He is obviously highly knowledgeable and I feel more content about why/why not certain treatment options would be recommended for my difficulty with slow transit constipation. Thank you sincerely.

i will recommend Prof. Knowles to anyone with a C/R problem,1000 % for any issue for that matter..
i saw Prof. Knowles and Prof. Cohen summer 2023,,,,( what a great team ), wow was i impressed with the new clinic.. Upon my return to LA I started my PT per Prof. Knowles recommendation.... I'm doing much better with my PT sessions and where I now consider myself almost pain free in my L. Ani.. muscles, I just wish the clinic were in LA, bit selfish but the truth !
And, I've been to UCLA, USC, and Cedars in LA where no one was able to diagnosis me over 15 yrs of pain.. your new facility is of the best worldwide, I've been there, there is no comparison to CC London, keep up the great work !!

I had my operation performed by Mr Charles Knowles and l have seen him today for my post op. I cannot thank him enough for repairing my hernia moving my stoma to the right and giving me my life back. I can walk straight now tie my shoe laces and since my op l have lost weight and feel so much better. Thank you for listening and being so caring l wish l could have seen you sooner. Thank you to all your staff at both clinics for their wonderful care. Than you once again.

I had a telephone conversation with Professor Charles Knowles on 9th March 2023. I found him to be a good listener and he asked about my medical history and how l felt about my stoma and hernia. I asked to be straight with me about my concerns regarding surgery and he replied with the most straightforward opinions which l have ever had. I am sure he will perform my operation with great care and l completely trust him all l need now is a date. Thank you.
