Dr Andy King is a highly experienced consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist in Birmingham who specialises in indigestion (dyspepsia), abdominal pain and liver function tests alongside fatty liver, viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease. He privately practises at The Harborne Hospital - part of HCA Healthcare, and his NHS base is University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
Since his appointment as a consultant in 2015, Dr King has developed a special interest in liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. His extensive experience in liver assessment and treatment encompasses advanced diagnostic techniques such as FibroScan, liver biopsy, and gastroscopy. He also collaborates closely with radiologists and surgeons to provide seamless care, including liver transplantation assessment and advanced endoscopic procedures.
Dr King earned his MB BS from Imperial College School of Medicine, London, in 2001. He completed his specialist training in gastroenterology and hepatology across the West Midlands, gaining advanced experience at the renowned Queen Elizabeth Liver Unit. During his career, he was awarded a Medical Research Council fellowship and obtained a PhD in Stem Cell Therapy from the University of Birmingham. His ground-breaking research included leading the first randomised clinical trial using stem cells in patients with cirrhosis. In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr King is passionate about education and training. He serves as the Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology in the West Midlands and is a GMC-accredited supervisor.
