Dr Athina Fonia is an experienced consultant dermatologist for both adults and children based in London. She specialises in nail diseases, autoimmune skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, acne, rosacea, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Dr Fonia is currently practising at her private clinics Skin55 and in Highgate Private Hospital, while also practising with Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
Amongst her specialities, Dr Fonia has a particular interest in premalignant skin lesions, skin cancer, their treatments; Botox injection treatment for hyperhidrosis; steroid injections for hair loss or keloid scars; and skin surgery. Whilst training in her speciality, Dr Fonia gained a specialist interest in onychology, which is the study of diseases of nails.
Dr Fonia received her First Class honours degree from King's College London, then subsequently completed her medical qualification from Guys', King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine in 2004. Dr Fonia completed her specialist training later in Bristol and Wales. She furthered her specialist training in the field of onychology by completing a fellowship in nail diseases and nail surgery at St Pierre and Brugmann University Hospitals in Brussels, Belgium, under the mentorship of a world-renowned dermatology and nail surgery professor.
Beyond the clinic and operating theatre, Dr Fonia writes patient information leaflets on nail diseases for the British Hair and Nail Society. In this same vein, she is an avid teacher and trains undergraduate medical students as well as trainee doctors in her field. Dr Fonia has presented at national and international conferences and has been widely published.
