Dr Chrysa Spyridakou is a highly experienced consultant audiovestibular physician who sees patients at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children. She specialises in the genetics of hearing loss, vestibular problems, audiovestibular problems in children with complex needs, auditory processing disorder and auditory neuropathy.
She has been a consultant in audiovestibular medicine since 2011. She was appointed at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2015, and is an hononary senior lecturer at University College London (UCL). Prior to that appointment she was a consultant in Adult and Paediatric Audiovestibular Medicine at Whittington NHS Trust. During that appointment she was the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) Clinical Team Leader for North Central London. Her training as an audiovestibular physician was in London at the renowned NHS Foundation Trust Hospitals including Charing Cross, St Ann's, Great Ormond Street, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square, and the Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital.
She completed training in otorhinolaryngology before exploring audiovestibular medicine and completing her training in this area. Dr Spyridakou was awarded her medical degree from National and Kapodistrian University in Athens, Greece. She was awarded a Master of Science in Audiovestibular medicine in 2008 from UCL and a doctor of medicine in 2015 from UCL. She manages general specialty clinics for children with hearing and balance problems. Dr Spyridakou runs an MDT hearing clinic for children with complex needs and a clinic for children with Auditory Processing Disorders. This is the only clinic in England that manages these disorders.
Dr Spyridakou is the educational lead of audiovestibular medicine at UCL and is also a member of the teaching committee for MSc students, where she supervises MSc research projects. Dr Spyridakou is the specialty advisory committee (SAC) lead for the curriculum in audiovestibular medicine in the UK. She is the honorary secretary of the International Association of Physicians in Audiology (IAPA) and also the chairman of the National Standards and Guidelines of the British Association of Audiovestibular Physicians (BAAP).
Dr Spyridakou has given over 150 British and international scientific presentations and over 50 invited lectures. She is an active researcher and has published in peer- reviewed journals.
