Professor Emmanouil Tsochatzis is a distinguished consultant hepatologist based in London, whose work in fatty liver and cirrhosis is internationally renowned.
Professor Tsochatzis, who consults privately at The Royal Free Hospital and at Platinum Medical Centre, originally qualified from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He undertook his hepatology training at the prestigious Hippokration General Hospital in Athens, and also obtained a PhD, before joining The Royal Free Hospital to complete his post-doctorate research. He was subsequently appointed as a Senior Clinical Lecturer in UCL and a Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital.
Professor Tsochatzis has a special interest in fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and complications, metabolic liver disease (including Wilson’s disease and heamochromatosis) and non-invasive fibrosis assessment. He has set up pathways for the early detection of liver disease and Liver Health checks in people at risk of liver fibrosis. He currently leads the specialist multidisciplinary service for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) at the UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health.
Professor Tsochatzis' reputation in the field of hepatology extends beyond clinical practice, holding key positions in national and international clinical guideline committees, being a specialist advisor to The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the North Thames Hepatology lead for the National Institute for Health Research. He is an expert advisor for the WHO and has participated in the guidelines for the management of HBV and HCV in resource-limited settings. Notably, he served as a member of the governing board of the European Association for the Study of the Liver from 2019 to 2022, and was also the appointed chair of the scientific committee from 2021 to 2022. He has won the prestigious Rising Star award by the United European Gastroenterology in 2014 and the Physician Scientist Fellowship by the European Association for the Study of the Liver.
As a clinician, Professor Tsochatzis is passionate about helping to improve patient outcomes for liver disease, and has led a number of international research collaborations in hepatology which have resulted in the publication of over 300 articles in high-impact, scientific peer-reviewed journals. He is the principal investigator for a number of investigator-led and commercial phase 2 and 3 clinical trials in therapies for fatty liver and cirrhosis and for the early detection of liver fibrosis. In the realm of academia, Professor Tsochatzis is a professor of hepatology and the head of the Centre for Metabolic Liver Disease at University College London.
