Dr Hafez Alawad is a renowned gynaecological oncology surgeon based in Northampton. He focuses principally on cancer diagnosis, endometriosis, heavy periods, gynaecological cancer, transvaginal ultrasound and laparoscopic hysterectomy. He holds expertise in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and complex open procedures
Dr Alawad earned his medical degree from Damascus University, Syria, in 2002-2003, followed by a one-year general surgery rotation. He then moved to the Czech Republic, where he completed his specialty training in obstetrics and gynaecology at one of the country's largest hospitals, becoming a fellow of the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Dr Alawad is certified by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) for managing abnormal cervical smears, early detection of precancerous changes, and treatment. He also holds a certificate from the IOTA (International Ovarian Tumour Analysis) group, reflecting his expertise in performing abdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds.
Appointed as a consultant gynaecological oncology surgeon at Northampton General Hospital in 2020, Dr Alawad has since worked on developing the hospital’s Oncology and Endometriosis Centre. He has also established a robotic Gynaecology Centre, completing his training on the advanced da Vinci robotic system.
With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr Alawad is actively involved in research aimed at earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer and improving patient management to reduce unnecessary surgeries. He also contributes to medical education, teaching students from Leicester and Oxford Universities, as well as training fellows and senior doctors at Northampton General Hospital in advanced laparoscopic and open surgical techniques.
