Miss Indu Deglurkar is a highly distinguished consultant cardiothoracic surgeon based in Cardiff. With more than 30 years of experience, Miss Deglurkar is internationally-renowned for her specialist expertise in aortic aneurysm surgery (aortic root replacement, ascending aorta and arch replacement), high-risk complex surgery in the elderly, and aortic valve, mitral valve and tricuspid valve repair and replacement. She also performs coronary artery bypass surgery and open-heart surgery, and has a particular interest in open-heart surgery in patients with learning difficulties.

Miss Deglurkar qualified from Gandhi Medical College in 1991 before relocating to the UK. She undertook her cardiothoracic training in Cambridge, Cardiff, Swansea and at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, where she also carried out vanguard gene therapy research work into myocardial regeneration in ischaemic cardiomyopathy. This research is now undergoing Phase 0 trials. Following her higher surgical training, Miss Deglurkar worked as a locum consultant cardiac surgeon at NHS Golden Jubilee University National Hospital and later joined the University Hospital of Wales in 2010, both as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon and as the lead cardiac and lead TAVI surgeon.

In the UK, Miss Deglurkar is one of the few consultant cardiothoracic surgeons who performs and specialises in major aortic and aneurysm surgeries. Her exemplary surgical outcomes have been commended by the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research with a survival rate of 100% for all adult cardiac procedures between 2019 and 2022. In 2016, Miss Deglurkar successfully performed the first hybrid thoraflex aortic arch aneurysm surgery in Wales. 

Further to her outstanding clinical practice, Miss Deglurkar notably is the chair of the senior medical staff committee at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, and the president of the Welsh Cardiothoracic Society. She is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Cardiff, and has been awarded a number of accolades for her outstanding achievements, including the renowned Lady Estelle Emerging Leaders fellowship and the Welsh Asian Women Achievement Award in 2013. Miss Deglurkar also serves as an independent external accountability expert to the Welsh Government on race equality.
