Dr James Mackay is a highly experienced and accredited consultant clinical genetic oncologist who specialises in cancer and general oncology. He currently practices at the London-based 108 Harley Street Medical and his main clinical interests include cancer genetics, inherited cancer, cancer screening as well as complex genetic testing in relation to clinical cancer care. Dr Mackay is currently the only accredited medical oncologist in the UK who possesses expertise in cancer genetics.
The revered game-changing oncologist established the first ever regular remote cancer genetics service in the world, which is based at the renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital. This high quality technological service enables Dr Mackay to impressively conduct real-time, live consultations with numerous amounts of patients based in various different London hospitals, all thanks to advanced tele-conferencing technology. He was also directly involved with establishing a numerous amount of regional cancer genetics services throughout East Anglia and North East Thames.
Dr Mackay was the main clinical investigator involved in an extensive regular mammography evaluation in women under 50 who had a family history of breast cancer, which was funded by the NHS Research and Development Programme. He was also the principal investigator in the UK Familial Ovarian Cancer Screening Study and was directly responsible for initiating the Genetic Breast Cancer Trial, a trial that focused specifically on chemotherapy in women with breast cancer who carry a faulty gene.
The renowned Dr Mackay, who is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, successfully completed further specialist training in not only the University of Cambridge, but also Trinity College, following his graduation from the University of Edinburgh in 1983.
He is also, at present, an honorary senior lecturer in the Research Department of Oncology, The UCL Cancer Institute, University College London, the chairman of the Independent Doctors Federation (IDF) Regulation Committee, as well as an expert speaker for both Myriad Genetics UK and Ireland and Myriad Genetics International.
