Dr James Moohan

Dr James Moohan is a distinguished consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist based in Belfast. His areas of expertise include fertility/infertility, minimally invasive surgery, reproductive medicine, endometriosis, uterine abnormalities, and assisted reproductive techniques like IVF (in vitro fertilisation).

Dr Moohan consults privately at TFP Belfast Fertility. With over 35 years’ experience, he also holds a consultant position at Altnagelvin Area Hospital since 1999, where he set up a dedicated infertility service focused on advanced hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgical procedures for the treatment of severe endometriosis and uterine abnormalities.

Notably, Dr Moohan’s commitment to improving endometriosis treatment also led to the establishment of the first British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) recognised endometriosis centre in Ireland.

Dr Moohan qualified from Queen’s University of Belfast in 1986, achieving both an MBBCh BAO and an intercalated BSc. He then completed higher specialist training at Hammersmith Hospital with Professor Lord Winston, before going on to complete two prestigious subspecialty fellowships. This included a subspecialty fellowship in laparoscopic surgery at Monash Medical Centre and another one in reproductive medicine and surgery at Rotunda Hospital.

Furthermore, Dr Moohan holds an MSc in Advanced Endoscopic Surgery from the University of Surrey and a Diploma in Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound, awarded jointly by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Radiologists. His papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented his research at both national and international conferences.
