Professor Jonathan Townend is a leading cardiologist, who holds a special interest in interventional cardiology, coronary artery disease and heart failure.
Professor Townend qualified in medicine at Birmingham University in 1983 and gained his MRCP in 1986. He trained in cardiology at St Georges Hospital London and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Professor Townend undertook research at the University of Birmingham and achieved his MD in 1994.
Alongside a career in interventional cardiology, Professor Townsend actively researches and has published widely on a variety of areas such as cardiac autonomic control, coronary artery disease and cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease.
He was the Clinical Lead for cardiology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham from 2011-2015. Currently, Professor Townend is a member of the BCIS clinical standards group and the Associate Director for R&D at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.
