Dr Joseph Kwan is a distinguished consultant in stroke medicine, neurorehabilitation, internal medicine, and gerontology. His main areas of expertise include brain haemorrhage, cognitive impairment, neurovascular disorders, stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA), neurological rehabilitation, and elderly medicine. Dr Kwan adopts a holistic and personalised approach to care, combining cutting-edge medical innovation with lifestyle as well as nutritional optimisation to ensure good wellbeing for the body, mind, and spirit. He provides expert guidance on recovery, prognosis, and regaining one's quality of life.
Dr Kwan, who consults privately at Cleveland Clinic London Rehabilitation Unit, successfully obtained his MBChB degree in 1994 from the University of Bristol, before going on to pursue an MPhil research degree in stroke at the University of Southampton. Dr Kwan also holds an MD from the University of Edinburgh, as well as a Postgraduate diploma in clinical neurological from University College London and a certificate in plant-based nutrition from Cornell University.
Notably, Dr Kwan holds esteemed fellowship to a number of prestigious organisations, including the European Stroke Organisation, the Royal Society of Public Health, the American Heart Association, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, the Hong Kong College of Physicians, and both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians of London. He was awarded a competitive dementia scholarship in 1995 to the University of California San Francisco.
Currently, Dr Kwan holds a senior stroke consultant position at Charing Cross Hospital, where he is also the lead for the NIHR Stroke Clinical Research Network and the director for the Imperial Stroke Education Programme. He has over 140 publications and book chapters to his name, and has been recognised with several major awards in stroke medicine. He is also an honorary senior lecturer at the Department of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London, where he conducts investigative stroke research.
