Mr Maninder Kalkat is a distinguished consultant cardiothoracic surgeon based in Birmingham who specialises in general thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology. His areas of expertise include tracheal and airway surgery, photodynamic therapy, chest wall resections and reconstruction, surgeries for pectus deformities (including the Nuss procedure), and minimally invasive surgery for myasthenia gravis.
Mr Kalkat consults privately at The Harborne Hospital. He also holds positions at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and at Priory Hospital Birmingham, and previously served as deputy medical director at University Hospitals Birmingham in 2021. Notably, Mr Kalkat is a pioneer in minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) procedure for major lung resections for lung cancer, and introduced the surgery in his region.
With over 35 years of experience, Mr Kalkat originally qualified from Government Medical College, Amritsar, where he achieved both an MBBS and an MS. He then obtained an MCh in cardiothoracic surgery from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Chandigarh, before completing higher specialist training in the prestigious West Midlands cardiothoracic surgical training programme. Furthermore, Mr Kalkat is a member of the regional multi-disciplinary teams that manage lung cancers, sarcomas involving the chest wall, mediastinal tumours, and central airway obstructions. In 2023, he was appointed chairperson of the Surgical Specialty Boards at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and in 2020, he also served as the organising secretary for the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland.
