Dr Nesan Shanmugam is a leading consultant cardiologist practising at New Victoria Hospital in London. With expertise in general cardiology, echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and heart failure management, Dr Shanmugam is also passionate about promoting heart disease prevention through healthy lifestyle and nutrition. His research contributions have been published in numerous national and international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Shanmugam earned a first class honours degree from King’s College, University of London, in 1998. His extensive training includes completing the South West London Cardiology rotation and specialist cardiology training, which he concluded in April 2013. He further honed his skills through an international fellowship at the National Heart Centre/Duke-NUS in Singapore, where he specialised in device therapy and advanced cardiac imaging.
In 2016, Dr Shanmugam played a pivotal role in the creation of the UK’s first national Heart Failure Unit, designed to provide specialised care to hospitalised heart failure patients. This innovative unit integrates nursing, therapy and cardiology services. In recognition of the team's outstanding work, the Heart Failure Unit was nominated for an award at the prestigious 2017 British Medical Awards.
