Professional statement

Mr Ranjit Deshpande is a senior consultant in cardiothoracic surgery who specialises in minimally invasive (keyhole) cardiac and thoracic surgery and is a prominent member of King’s Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) programme. His expertise also extends to general cardiothoracic surgery.

Renowned for his innovative techniques, Mr Deshpande frequently uses bilateral internal mammary arteries during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) to achieve near-total arterial revascularisation for ischemic heart disease. He is internationally recognised for performing endoscopic CABG as a “beating heart” procedure, avoiding the need for sternotomy.

Mr Deshpande completed his training through the South-East Thames London Cardiothoracic Surgical Programme. He earned a prestigious scholarship from the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons to train in port-access endoscopic mitral valve repair for mitral valve prolapse at OLV Zeinkenhaus in Belgium. In 2006, he advanced his expertise further as a Senior Registrar in Advanced Aortic and Robotic Cardiac Surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

A vital member of the South London Cardiac Network’s complex major aortic surgery group, Mr Deshpande focuses on challenging cases such as aortic root and aortic dissection surgery. He is also the founder and treasurer of the British and Irish Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, reflecting his leadership in advancing the field of minimally invasive cardiac procedures.

Dr Deshpande explained in detail the diagnosis and also the review by the MDT team which reaffirmed the treatment plan and I felt confident dealing with Dr Deshpande. He was always listening and clarified any questions which we had as a family before and after the surgery.

Mr Deshpande is my NHS consultant and has been reviewing my heart for two to three years before recommending heart surgery last summer, with a follow up in November when I agreed to open heart surgery. As an operation under the NHS might be some time, I suggested I went private and had open heart surgery in the Cleveland Hospital undertaken by Mr Deshpande on 18th January with two heart valves replaced and one repaired. A few days later I had a pacemaker inserted and left hospital after a total of 7 days. I was apprehensive about the operation but reassured by Mr Deshpande's calm and professional approach and agreed with him that the experience was less bad than I had anticipated. Mr Deshpande and his surgical team were highly professional and Cleveland Hospital provided a very high standard of after-care. I would recommend Mr Deshpande very highly to anyone like me who is nervous about similar operations. Very highly recommended!
