Dr. Kalentzi explains what to expect in the initial menopause session Hello, my name is Dr. Theodora Kalentzi and I am a GP with a special interest in menopause. This is an area in which I hold advanced training and I'm really passionate about. Many women ask me what to expect from the first consultation from the menopause. I recently had a man ask me the same question on behalf of his wife which I found very encouraging. The menopause may present with many symptoms, some are very well known such as hot flashes and night sweats others not so, for example, skin irritation, bladder symptoms, muscle stiffness. So my aim at the first consultation is, first of all, to diagnose where you are in the menopause and what symptoms might be due to the menopause and then look at the appropriate management options for you. So there will be a detailed history taken of your symptoms, of your previous medical history and also your family history. I'm particularly interested in the conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer (especially breast cancer) and osteoporosis. We will also talk about your lifestyle so there will be questions about your smoking habits, how much alcohol you might take in the week. if you exercise and what your diet looks like. At that stage with this information, usually, there is enough to make a clinical diagnosis of whether some of your symptoms or all of them relate to the menopause and where you are ( is it the perimenopause or have you been through the change) and then we can move on to looking at the management options. Now, this is the part we talk about individualized treatment because not one size fits all, not one treatment might help every woman out there. So this really where we need to take into consideration lots of factors so that is current evidence on risks, effectiveness, side effects. We will look at methods of taking the medication, so, for example, is it through the mouth, is it through the skin, other ways and really importantly what feels comfortable and appropriate for you. There is no point, for example, talking about hormone replacement if this something you do not want to consider at all although there is good evidence about the effectiveness. There are other treatments, there are other options, there are other ways to manage your symptoms. This is really where we will go through all the different options and identify the one that is appropriate for you, the safest in terms of current evidence and the one that suits your beliefs, values, and preferences. Finally, we will talk about when the next review should take place, what it will look like, what needs to be involved.
