Professor Ewen Griffiths

Professional statement

Professor Ewen Griffiths is a highly-skilled consultant surgeon specialising in upper gastrointestinal (GI) and general surgery. His areas of expertise include upper GI surgery, hernia repair and gallbladder surgery alongside acid reflux management, hiatal hernia surgery and endoscopy. He privately practices at The Harborne Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, and his NHS base is Birmingham University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. 

Professor Griffiths graduated from the University of Dundee, where he earned his MB ChB in 2000. His early career culminated in the achievement of membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow) in 2004. He went on to conduct significant research into hypoxia-associated factors in oesophagogastric cancer at the Paterson Institute of Cancer Research, Christie Hospital, and Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, leading to numerous publications and the award of an MD (Doctorate in Medicine) degree from Manchester University in 2006.

Professor Griffiths obtained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010 and completed his specialist surgical training (CCT) in 2012. To further enhance his expertise, he trained for a year as a senior upper GI fellow at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia, focusing on advanced laparoscopic surgery for anti-reflux surgery, giant hiatus hernia repairs, upper GI cancer and bariatric surgery.

He is a member of various professional organisations including the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons and the GB&I (ALSGBI), West Midlands Surgical Society, European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons, International Society of Disease of the Esophagus (ISDE), and the Royal College of Surgeons.

He was awarded membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2023. The University of Birmingham awarded him an Honorary Professorship in 2023 in recognition of his research output and supervision of PhD, MSc, and BSc students researching aspects of upper GI diseases, including cancer. 

He led the CholeS study with the West Midlands Research Collaborative on UK outcomes of cholecystectomy and also led the Oesophagogastric Anastomosis Audit (OGGA). He has a strong interest in academic research in the area of upper GI surgery.
