What is UroLift®?

The UroLift® system is a minimally-invasive procedure used for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is considered to be a revolutionary system as no heating, cutting or tissue removal is required. The procedure is a treatment option for the early stages of BPE, which means that the patient can stop taking any BPE medication and also avoid major surgery in the future. 
 

What are the symptoms of benign prostate enlargement?

The symptoms of BPE include:

  • frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • increased need to urinate during the night (nocturia)
  • trouble starting to urinate
  • urine stream that stops and starts
  • inability to fully empty the bladder
     

Who is suitable for the procedure?

Patients who typically respond well to UroLift® are those who's prostate is not very enlarged (between 30-80 cc). Men who opt for the procedure are those who wish to minimise the sexual side effects experienced from taking medication, such as sexual dysfunction. It is suitable for those who prefer to have a minimally-invasive procedure instead of surgery. 
 

What happens during the UroLift® procedure?

During the procedure, the urologist places a very small implant (clips) within the prostate, which holds open the prostate lobes and the prostate tissue so that there is no longer any obstruction that blocks the urethra. This allows the enlarged prostate to decompress and decrease in size. Usually, only local anaesthesia is required and patients can return home on the same day.

  • An immediate improvement in the ability to pass urine.
  • No catheter is required.
  • No new problems associated with sexual dysfunction.
