Using artificial intelligence to detect oesophageal cancer

Recent medical innovation has seen the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in performing endoscopic imaging in the screening for pre-cancerous and cancerous abnormalities. Such technology presents a way to improve the detection of early oesophageal cancer. Dr Rehan Haidry is an innovative gastroenterologist and endoscopist, who is actively shaping this future of cancer detection, and here he discusses how AI fits into his field.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and your gut bacteria

Within our digestive tract, we all have a complex community of gut bacteria or gut flora. This mix of bacteria lines the length of your gut and are said to affect your metabolism, your immune system, and even your mood. Dr Aathavan Loganayagam, a leading gastroenterologist, discusses the recent findings that link your gut flora with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

How to relieve symptoms of IBS

The cause of Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not entirely understood. In IBS, the gut appears normal, with no inflammation or any abnormal findings on investigation. IBS is sometimes called a “functional” disorder because symptoms are thought to be caused by the way in which the gut works, for example, the passage of food through the gut may be either too slow or too quick. In addition, the gut may be oversensitive to distension by either gas or food content, causing pain or discomfort. The symptoms of IBS may be exacerbated by certain foods or stress. Here to tell us more about IBS and how we can manage it is Dr John Martin.
