What is stomach flu?

Stomach flu, or gastroenteritis, generally refers to a viral infection that causes an irritated and inflamed stomach and gastrointestinal tract. Despite the name, the stomach flu has nothing to do with the regular flu. Whilst stomach flu causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, influenza (“the flu”) causes body aches, headaches, fevers, and cold-like symptoms, such as a sore throat or a runny nose. Dr Aathavan Loganayagam, a top gastroenterologist, explains the causes, symptoms and treatment of stomach flu.
