Aerosol therapy
What is aerosol therapy?
Aerosol therapy is a technique of administering drugs by inhalation through a nebulizer or compressor. The first is used in clinics and hospitals while the second can be used by the patient in daily life. The latter is most commonly used to treat diseases such as bronchitis, respiratory tract infections, asthma, cystic fibrosis or carcinogenic processes.
Currently there are several drugs that are administered in this way but the most common are antibiotics, bronchodilators, corticosteroids or anti-viral drugs etc.
What does it consist of?
The use of the device is simple and consists of the inhalation (through the mouth) of the indicated medication dose, by pressing the inhaler containing the medication.
With the aerosol treatment, a nebulizer or aerosol is used that breaks the drug in a mist of drug droplets. When the patient inhales, these drops pass through the mouth into the trachea, passing through the bronchi and reaching the alveoli.
Why is it done?
Aerosol treatment is used to treat chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as acute infectious diseases such as pneumonia.
