Hypopressive exercise
What are hypopressive exercises?
Abdominal hypopressive exercises are a series of exercises and breathing techniques, which, if done in the right manner and under the supervision of a professional, help to give the individual a strong and toned abdomen, in addition to strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, and burning calories.
Why are they done?
Hypopressive exercises involve decreasing the pressure in the abdominal, thoracic and pelvic cavities. They may be performed to obtain a more aesthetic and toned abdomen and/or to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. These exercises are very popular after childbirth to strengthen and tighten the abdominal muscles. They may also be used (if approved by a doctor) after certain surgeries that may have affected the pelvic floor. Some of the purported benefits that these exercises bring are:
- Strengthening the abdominal girdle
- Tightening the abdomen and giving a more toned physique.
- Posture and functional improvements.
- Reducing stress.
- Strengthening the pelvic floor.
- Improving postpartum recovery
- Preventing urinary incontinence.
What do hypopressive exercises consist of?
Hypopressive exercises involve maintaining certain postures and following a strict breathing technique that involves pulling in the abdomen in order to work the diaphragm.
Who should do hypopressive exercises?
Individuals performing hypopressive exercises must have good respiratory and vascular health. It is not recommended for pregnant women. If the patient is recovering from illness or surgery, they should follow their doctor or physiotherapist’s advice on what (if any) exercises they should be doing.
