What are invisible braces?
Invisible braces correct the position of the bones and teeth using appliances that are invisible to the eye. With this technique, the fixed appliances (braces) are placed on the inner side of the teeth, whereas with the conventional technique they are placed on the outer side. The same results are obtained with both techniques, but invisible braces are more aesthetically acceptable, for some, but they are more expensive and take longer to achieve the desired result.
However, another invisible braces technique has now been developed, consisting of removable transparent splints that are located on the outside of the teeth and are virtually imperceptible to the eye. These are custom made from a resistant plastic material (polycarbonate). Treatment time is similar to that for the conventional technique.
Types of invisible braces:
There are two main types of invisible braces:
- Lingual: This is similar to conventional orthodontics, although the braces are not as thick and are placed on the inner surfaces of the teeth, so they are imperceptible from the outside. They are custom made using a 3D computer program, based on the dental structure of each person.
- Invisalign: This is an innovative treatment that involves making a custom-made transparent splint in which attachments are placed to control the movement of the teeth towards the required position. The splint is made of plastic material and is replaced approximately every two weeks as indicated by the specialist. In addition to being invisible, another advantage is that it is completely removable, so you can take it out whenever you need to.
Advantages and disadvantages of invisible braces:
All the techniques are effective, though they differ in some ways. Invisalign is a treatment that does not involve the use of wires or braces, thus avoiding ulcers and the discomfort associated with this type of orthodontics. It is also removable, making it much more comfortable as you can take it out for eating and brushing your teeth, which is an advantage when it comes to maintaining good oral hygiene.
The lingual orthodontic system is not removable, however, although it avoids the damage that can be caused by conventional orthodontic appliances, such as decalcification and stains. The lingual treatment is also completely invisible.
