Metanephrines
What is being analysed here?
Metanephrines are being analysed here, They are inactive metabolites of catecholamines such as epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. They are measured in a 24-hour urine sample.
Why is this analysis performed?
The analysis is used to establish or rule out the diagnosis of adrenal gland tumours, such as pheochromocytoma, and other neuroendocrine tumours like paraganglioma.
When should the analysis be carried out?
When a tumour producing catecholamines is suspected, in patients with persistent or episodic high blood pressure, especially those over 40 years old, and in individuals with a genetic risk for these tumours.
What sample is required?
A 24-hour urine sample.
Is any special preparation needed?
Avoid foods such as coffee, tea, chocolate, bananas, and citrus before the test. Consult with the doctor regarding medications that may affect the results.
How is it used?
The amount of metanephrines and normetanephrines in the urine is measured.
What are considered to be normal values?
Normal values: Adults: Less than 200 μg/24 h. Children: Less than 150 μg/24 h.
What do abnormal values indicate?
Elevated values may indicate the presence of catecholamine-producing tumours.
