What is post-concussion syndrome?
Post-concussion syndrome is a condition that simply refers to patients who have suffered from a concussion continuing to suffer the consequences for a longer period of time than is considered to be the standard recovery period after a concussion.
What are the symptoms?
There are many symptoms that patients who suffer from post-concussion syndrome may experience. The most commonly reported symptoms are as follows:
- dizziness
- headaches
- memory problems
- sleep problems
- concentration problems
- mood changes
- difficulty tolerating physical exertion and exercise
What causes post-concussion syndrome?
The exact causes of post-concussion syndrome are unknown. However, patients who have previously experienced or suffered from frequent headaches, anxiety, depression, or attention or learning deficits or disabilities prior to their concussion are at a higher risk of suffering from post-concussion syndrome.
How long does post-concussion syndrome last?
If post-concussion syndrome is left untreated and doesn't receive appropriate and prompt medical attention, it can, unfortunately, last from anywhere between a couple of months to even a couple of years.
How is post-concussion syndrome diagnosed?
There is no definitive test that is used to detect post-concussion syndrome. However, depending on the patients' symptoms presented, the doctor can diagnose the condition in one or more of the following ways:
- MRI scan
- CT scan
- referral to an ENT surgeon to detect cause of dizziness
How is post-concussion syndrome treated?
If the patient is suffering from anxiety, depression, or any other emotional disorder, then referral to a psychologist can be the first line of treatment for post-concussion syndrome. There are many other ways to treat post-concussion syndrome. They include:
- gentle, light exercise
- neck therapy
- medication
- vestibular therapy
Which specialist treats post-concussion syndrome?
There are, in fact, several medical specialists that are qualified when it comes to the treatment of post-concussion syndrome. These include neurologists, neuropsychologists, personal trainers, as well as physical therapists.
When should I seek immediate medical attention?
If you are experiencing problems with your vision, hearing, and/or memory, you are advised to seek medical help immediately. Patients are encouraged to see their GP if their post-concussion-related symptoms persist for more than two weeks.
