Professional statement
Mr Andraay Leung is a leading consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon based in Birmingham and Stourbridge. He specialises in spinal degenerative conditions, adult spinal deformity alongside spinal trauma and minimally invasive spinal surgery. He privately practises at Harborne Hospital and Stourside Hospital. His NHS base is University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which is the UK’s busiest major trauma centre.
Mr Leung solely practices in spinal surgery, and can deal with conditions affecting the neck (cervical spine), thoracic spine, and lower back (lumbar spine). Apart from treating spinal degenerative conditions, Mr Leung’s subspecialist interests are spinal trauma and adult spinal deformity.
Mr Leung qualified from the University of Glasgow. He then went on to undertake higher training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the West of Scotland region. After he became a specialist orthopaedic surgeon, he completed combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical complex spinal fellowships at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
Mr Leung was an early adopter of remote consultations, recognising the convenience to patients by saving time and travel. In 2017 he took part in a novel initiative to trial virtual spinal clinics in Glasgow, providing telephone consultations to patients around the West of Scotland region. Since then, remote consultations have been a big part of his clinical practise.
He is enthusiastic about teaching and research. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and previously at the University of Glasgow. He has been an associate principal investigator in two multi-centre, randomised controlled trials in spinal trauma. He is on the steering committee of a multi-centre observational study into cauda equina syndrome (UCES). His work has been published in various peer-reviewed journals. In 2021 he was invited to the teaching faculty for the UK Advanced Spinal Trauma course organized by AO Spine, the leading global fraternity for spinal surgeons.
Mr Leung is also a respected leader in the wider orthopaedic and surgical community. He was Councillor for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, representing surgeons outside Scotland, between 2018 and 2021. He has been nominated to attend the Future Leaders Programme for Surgeons with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also a member of various professional organisations including the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS) and AO Spine, while Mr Leung is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

I recently saw Mr Leung with my elderly mother who was in need of spinal surgery. He made her feel safe and important throughout the consultation and during her hospital stay for surgery. He took time to explain everything
