Dr Charles Archer is a highly respected consultant dermatologist who treats both adult and paediatric patients in Reading. He is renowned for his expertise in basal cell carcinoma, cryotherapy and ceroscopy. He also specialises in eczema, genital dermatology, nail diseases, acne, hyperhidrosis and dermoscopy.
Dr Archer qualified in medicine from University College London in 2008 having previously completed a bachelor’s degree with honours in human genetics and molecular sciences. He then pursued further training at various centres in the UK, including The Royal Free Hospital, and Manly and Mona Vale Hospitals in Sydney, Australia. During this time, Dr Archer also undertook medical and surgical voluntary work at the Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and was appointed as a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2012. In 2014, he was awarded with a Master’s in integrated immunology from the University of Oxford. Following specialist training in dermatology at Oxford University Hospitals and the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Dr Archer was appointed as a consultant dermatologist. He also holds the positions of skin cancer lead and head of the biologics clinic for complex medical dermatology patients at his NHS base. He sees private patients at the revered Derma Reading clinic, an established centre for excellence in dermatological care.
Additional to his clinical responsibilities, Dr Archer remains actively involved in research and is currently involved in three key clinical trials related to melanoma and paediatric psoriasis diagnosis and the treatment of eczema. He also regularly leads auditing and quality improvement projects to improve patient care and outcomes. Dr Archer is a member of various professional bodies, including the British Medical Dermatology Society and the British Society of Dermatological Surgery, amongst others.
Throughout his esteemed career, Dr Archer has held various teaching responsibilities and is the current regional teaching lead for dermatology with Thames Valley Deanery. He is also a co-author of the ‘Skin and systemic disease’ module of the University of Plymouth’s diploma of dermatology for GPs. He has published numerous academic papers which appear in peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker at national dermatology conferences. In recognition of his dedication to his practice and the excellence of his academic work, Dr Archer has received various prizes throughout his career, including the Gurney Innovation Award in 2012 from Watford General Hospital.
