Professional statement

Professor Jamie Murphy is a highly regarded consultant colorectal surgeon, with over 20 years of experience, based in London. He provides treatment for a wide range of colorectal issues, while focusing principally on colorectal cancer, anorectal disease,  gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST), Crohn's disease, diverticular disease, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and ulcerative colitis.

Professor Murphy received his medical education from the University of St. Andrews, Harvard University, and St. John’s College, Cambridge. He pursued advanced training in general surgery at the Royal London Hospital and earned a PhD in Colorectal Molecular Oncology. He then undertook further specialisation, undergoing three fellowships in colorectal surgery, focusing on complex pelvic cancers, heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for recurrent abdominal cancers, and advanced minimally invasive colorectal surgery.

He then served as assistant professor of colorectal surgery at Mayo Clinic before joining Imperial College and Cleveland Clinic London as a consultant colorectal surgeon and Professor of Surgery.

Professor Murphy's clinical interests lie in treating complex bowel cancers, leading to the establishment of advanced pelvic cancer and HIPEC services. He also explores high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for unconventional bowel cancer cases. Professor Jamie Murphy has been absolutely phenomenal, leading my major cytoreductive surgery and peri-operative care. Whilst a medical team in Switzerland did not feel confident that they were able to operate adequately, my family contacted Professor Murphy who very promptly responded and stepped in to save the situation. His extraordinary expertise has given me the best chance at longer term survival. Her complex operation was conducted so flawlessly, it resulted in a much faster recovery than expected. Professor Murphy’s profound human qualities are truly superb, very honest and caring, approachable and friendly, explaining complicated medical facts in the most clear and concise way possible. Professor Murphy is an outstanding world-class expert and absolute treasure, I am very lucky and eternally grateful to him. confident that they were able to operate adequately, my family contacted Professor Murphy who very promptly responded and stepped in to save the situation. Professor Murphy is by far one of the kindest, most attentive medical professionals I have met in my life. After being dismissed multiple times historically by others Dr's (non-Cleveland Drs) - he took my case on and saw it through until I reached a resolution. He was honest about my situation, compassionate and made me feel safe/comfortable to express concerns about what is considered an embarrassing topic. I will forever be thankful to this incredible Dr & am so glad I found him.

He took the time to get to know me and my personal situation, and listened attentively. I think he’s on top of his game.

I had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. In December 2021 Professor Murphy removed a tumour and resectioned my upper colon and duodenum collaborating in theatre with Mr Charles Imber at The London Clinic. His care and good humour were a great support as I had to remain in hospital for almost a month whilst my revised digestive system adjusted to the new pathway devised by them. His skill and and the trouble taken to explain matters to me and my wife were a great encouragement to recovering my weight and strength. I will see my clinical oncologist to be (hopefully) signed off within the month and will be for ever thankful for the treatment I received. 10 Aug 2022

Mr Jamie Murphy is a superb colorectal Consultant. He has been fantastic to work with to develop new clinical guidelines such as HIPEC (Heated Intraperitoneal chemotherapy) advised by NICE for peritoneal disease. Always very quick to get back to me about any clinical issues affected his patients as well as any overall prescribing practice issues within the surgery team at large such as how we manage antimicrobial prophylaxis in complex colorectal surgery; Jamie's antimicrobial stewardship and engagement with the multidisciplinary team are excellent.
