Mr John Stebbing

Mr John Stebbing is a consultant surgeon based in Guildford, Surrey. He practises at Nuffield Health Guildford and at Mount Alvernia Hospitals. He specialises in colonoscopy, bowel cancer screening, assessment of abdominal symptoms, piles (haemorrhoids), other anal conditions and hernia surgery.
 
Mr Stebbing started his medical journey at St John’s College, Cambridge, and Guy’s Hospital in London, graduating with distinction in surgery in 1987. He began his surgical career as a senior house office in Guildford, and his training took him through various locations, including the South West Thames Region, Oxford, Gloucester, and Bristol. From 1994-6 he was a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellow in Oxford pursuing a period of research which led to him being appointed as Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons and being awarded the John of Arderne Medal by the Royal Society of Medicine.
In 1999, he became a consultant surgeon in Guildford and has enjoyed a fulfilling career to date, balancing clinical responsibilities with roles in training, education, and clinical management.
 
A particular focus has been on bowel cancer screening and endoscopy quality. From 2011 to 2017, he chaired the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy, overseeing accreditation for endoscopy services across the UK and supporting future endoscopists' training.
 
In his current practice, Mr Stebbing serves as the Chief of Service of the Division of Surgery at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. Regional roles include being Clinical Director of the Surrey Bowel Cancer Screening Centre and Professional Clinical Advisor to the screening quality assurance service in the South of England. Nationally, he is Chair of the Bowel Screening Clinical Advisory Committee and a member of the Early Detection and Screening Task & Finish Group (NHSE).   Additionally, he has recently demitted having served for seven years as a Trustee of Bowel Cancer UK, emphasising his commitment to advancing colorectal care at various levels.
