Mr Sanjay Miranda is a highly respected consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hand, upper limb and peripheral nerve conditions. Based in Teesside, he receives referrals from Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, Durham, Tyneside, Wearside and Cumbria. He is renowned for his expertise in hand and wrist surgery and the treatment of nerve entrapment, including carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes, and arm pain. He receives tertiary referrals from consultant colleagues for hand and wrist cases, and also many recommendations from previous patients.
Mr Miranda qualified in medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1993 before pursuing specialist training in orthopaedic surgery at various hospitals across the Midlands. He then specialised in hand, upper limb and peripheral nerve surgery. In 2004, he completed a year-long interface hand surgery fellowship at the world-renowned Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. Following this, he undertook a senior fellowship in Sydney, Australia at The Royal North Shore Hospital relating to peripheral nerve surgery, microsurgery, cerebral palsy and nerve injuries amongst other highly specialised aspects of hand and upper limb surgery. He also did an upper limb fellowship at the North Sydney and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Centre gaining experience in sports injuries.
In 2005, he was appointed as a consultant and acquired a wealth of expertise and experience in all areas of hand, upper limb and peripheral nerve surgery through his work in a major trauma centre at James Cook University Hospital for 14 years. During this time, Mr Miranda was awarded a postgraduate diploma in hand surgery from the University of Manchester in 2011 and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons as a trauma and orthopaedics specialist. He established his private practice in 2006 and sees private patients at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, Nuffield Health Tees Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees and Ramsay Tees Valley Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Throughout his busy career, Mr Miranda has held a number of senior positions, including as part of a multidisciplinary team treating major trauma to the upper limb and trust mortality lead for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, which has been his NHS base since 2019. He is a former anatomy demonstrator for the University of Nottingham and continues to teach and train undergraduates and postgraduates in hand surgery. Mr Miranda has authored several academic papers which have appeared in peer-reviewed medical journals, and maintains an active interest in research. He has co-authored a chapter on the wrist in the 2nd edition of the Oxford Handbook of Hand Surgery. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.
