Dr. Sara McCartney is a consultant gastroenterologist and currently serves as the Divisional Clinical Director for GI Services at University College London Hospitals, as well as the North Central London Endoscopy Lead. She has a subspecialty interest in managing complex ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Dr. McCartney is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist within the National Screening Programme and serves as an examiner for colonoscopic accreditation. She completed a PhD on inflammatory mechanisms in IBD at the University of London as an MRC Clinical Training Fellow.
Dr. McCartney has been a prominent figure in the British Society of Gastroenterology, having established and chaired the Adolescent and Young Person's section, and served on the BSG IBD committee. She runs a large multidisciplinary IBD clinic for adolescents and young adults at UCLH, focusing on optimal care for young patients, and has created a joint IBD and pregnancy clinic in collaboration with the obstetrics team. Dr. McCartney was a key contributor to guidelines on transition in GI disease and is the chief investigator in the TRANSIT study. She also lectures widely on managing adult and adolescent IBD, as well as IBD during pregnancy.
