Colorectal cancer begins with a polyp that develops on the mucosa lining the colon or rectum. The test to detect polyps or colorectal cancer is called a endoscopy, when a thin and flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is introduced into the anus to examine the whole colon (colonoscopy) or the left side of the colon (flexible sigmoidoscopy). Biopsies can be taken down the endoscope and small polyps can be removed without the need for surgery. Virtual colonoscopy is a special type of CT scan that can also detect polyps of a certain size or cancers in the colon or rectum. It is not possible to take biopsies by this imaging modality. The purpose of these tests is to determine the presence of adenomas and polyps in the colon and to surgically remove them before they become cancerous.
