By 2013, Sujatha completed her specialist plastic surgery training in the UK and passed the plastic surgery examination by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS plas) in 2013. Following this, she gained further specialised training in breast surgery, breast and limb reconstruction and microsurgery.

A prestigious cosmetic fellowship at the London Wellington Hospital allowed her to work with some leading cosmetic surgeons in London and gain a wide breadth of training in cosmetic surgery including breast, facial and body contouring procedures. After gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in the UK, she was entered into the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register for plastic surgery in 2014.

His recent academic achievements include an MD Res degree from King’s College London in 2024, with a thesis focusing on the microbiome and genetics in oral and gut Crohn's disease.

He also worked closely with fashion retailer Burberry to provide St Mary's Hospital with one tonne of surgical gowns to help with the shortfall of PPE protection during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. During the current Covid-19 surge, Mr Purkayastha has collaborated with Mr John Vincent and LEON to provide more than 300 meals per day for the ICU staff at St Mary's Hospital.

Professor Purkayastha is an avid researcher and educator. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and nearly 8000 citations.

Her main research area is cochlear implantation in children as well as prevention of acquired hearing such as meningitis and ototoxicity.
