Mr Matthew Edwards is a highly experienced consultant ophthalmologist specialising in cataract and corneal surgery, anterior segment surgery, ocular surface disease and both laser and lens-based refractive surgery.
Mr Edwards has accumulated a vast amount of experience in all types of refractive surgery, such as LASIK, LASEK, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). He is currently an active member of the British Society of Refractive Surgery, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, he holds an honorary senior lecturer position at the University of Sheffield, regularly publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is on the exam board of the Certificate of Laser and Refractive Surgery, the Royal College professional examination.
In 2001, Mr Edwards became a consultant at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Here is where he introduced many innovative techniques and surgical procedures, such as corneal endothelial and deep anterior lamellar corneal transplant and, as treatments for keratoconus, collagen cross-linking and corneal intra-stromal ring segments.
Mr Matthew Edwards completed his ophthalmology training in Leeds and Sheffield. In 2000, he undertook his fellowship training in corneal surgery, ocular surface disease and refractive surgery in Auckland, New Zealand. He is now a fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is a highly valued consultant at the LaserVision clinic at the Sheffield Vision Centre.
