Mr Nikolaos Chatzizacharias is a distinguished consultant hepato-pancreato-biliary and liver transplant surgeon based in Birmingham. His areas of expertise include locally advanced pancreatic cancer, cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), liver cancer, gallbladder surgery, and complex resections. He is highly proficient in both open and minimally invasive surgical procedures, as well as robotic surgery.

Mr Chatzizacharias consults privately at The Harborne Hospital. He is also the lead for the Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer Programme at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, recognised as the largest of its kind in the UK. Since 2017, he also practises at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

With over 20 years’ experience, Mr Chatzizacharias originally qualified from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he earned an MD and later achieved a PhD in pancreatic cancer research. Mr Chatzizacharias undertook basic surgical training in Oxford, before going on to complete higher specialist training in upper gastrointestinal, hepato-pancreato-biliary, transplant surgery on the prestigious East of England and University of Cambridge rotation.

Mr Chatzizacharias notably accomplished a fellowship in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He also holds esteemed fellowship to both The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The American College of Surgeons. His commitment to advancing treatment options for pancreatic cancer has made him a leader in his field.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Chatzizacharias is active in research, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences. He holds an honorary associate clinical professor position at the University of Birmingham, and he also serves as the principal investigator for the DISSECT trial, which investigates the role of periadventitial dissection in improving surgical margins during resectable pancreatic cancer surgery.
